Picture of the Week #26

The famous Thaniya red-light lane in Bangkok, which is near the even-more-famous Phat Phong red-light lane.  I received about a dozen "offers" in the short time that I spent here.  This is big business in Thailand and many foreigners come here just for that.  Just to be clear, I only came to Bangkok to get my Burmese visa.

But I must say, the place is fascinating and is a must visit for everyone.  Of course, it's only fun to walk around here "after dark".

Hand-made Anandwan Greeting Cards

The following hand-made greeting cards made using recycled materials by the disabled residents of Anandwan are for sale in Toronto, Canada.

All proceeds from the sale will go to Baba Amte's Anandwan.  There is no "profit" and I will keep nothing for myself.  I have no official tie-up with Anandwan.  I'm just doing this to raise money for a good organization.

Please read my Report on Anandwan if you would like more information on Anandwan.

I brought 500 of these hand-made cards with me during my recent trip to India.  I will wire-transfer the money to Anandwan by the end of 2010.  The goal is to raise roughly Rs.100,000 or C$2,500.  I'm selling these for only C$5.00 a piece.

Please contact Neeraj at neeraj(dot)ss(at)gmail(dot)com if you would like to purchase these or if you require more information.  I would also like to hear from you if you can help in any other way.

Clearly, these are not the work of amateurs.  The cards are professionally made by disabled yet talented artists.

The cards are blank and require you to write your own message.  But do not be put off by that.  Send someone special an Anandwan Greeting Card and say you love them very much... simple as that.

Traffic in Rangoon (Yangon), Burma (Myanmar).  The guy in blue is always on the lookout for waiting passengers and signals/whistles to the driver to stop/start the vehicle.  He also collects money from everyone by dangerously going around the truck.  How would you like his job?

Myanmar's Kyaiktiyo Pagoda, also known as the "Golden Rock".  This is the 3rd most important Buddhist pilgrimage site in Burma.  It is a truly enchanting place and I wish I had more time to spend here.
